There are 3 main criteria of data communication networks - Performance, Reliability & Security. These three things make for better data communication in a network.
Performance depends on the number of factors that are included in the performance. The number of users has an effect on the performance, the types of the transmission medium, the quality of the hardware devices as well as software reliability.
A large amount of simultaneous network users can slow a network's performance. If poorly designed, the network can create problems. For enhancing network performance, the medium which is a factor in defining the speed at which data travels, should be specified. If fiber optic cables are use to make connnections in the network, the performance will be higher. Hardware and software also influence the performance of the network. For better performance, faster computers are an obvious choice. Software should work well because communication steps done by the software. The software should be as error free as possible.
Reliability also depends on a number of factors. The main factors are frequency of failure, recovery time of a network after failure, fire, earthquake or theft.
The security is the most important factor in data communication because every organization contains sensitive data, which needs to be kept from other people. The network should be secure and be protected on multiple levels. All the application of the network should be safeguarded with usernames and passwords for security reasons.
These are the main criteria that enables good data communication across a network. If these above mentioned points aren't utilised then you cannot create a robust network. Although it could still be accessible by any theft. Data communication is very important for any organization and these three things together make robust data communication.
